This Blog is a portfolio for my Architectural Design work, initially beginning with my studies at University through to the present day. My work has been a constant exploration. Experimenting, innovating, developing methods of connecting place, people and the planet. An exploration for how buildings and the built environment can respond to its environment and be a source of inspiration in this the 21st century. The built environment can be more than simple places of habitation, work & play, but engines for change.
My motto for architecture is "Design the change you want to see in the world".
I believe the built environment through design is a powerful and important tool in combating the ills of the modern world and lifting the spirit of mankind. Through design one can begin to correct the harm done to the planet. The built environment can bring new hope and possibility. Designers have a responsibility to mankind in the present and in the future. What we design today are the choices and the impacts of tomorrow. Design in all its form should always seek to protect what is most important.
Buildings alone can stand for centuries. They are places of habitation for each of us, they are where we learn and teach, where we enjoy each others company, they are essential to our existence. A single place or building has the power to draw to it people from other continents but it can also be a place of refuge and security for just a few.
However they are also large consumers of energy, water and resources, from construction to demolition. Whether it's the home of a president or the home of a refugee, each place, each building is fundamental to our existence and necessary to protect that which we value, but it must also be respectful of its place in a grander existence.
Designing to use our resources sustainably is the right thing to do for a more equitable and free world. Designing responsibly and sustainably can not just be a one off fad or feel good exercise. Designers need to commit to it as part of the process to a point where we stop calling it "Green Architecture" and awarding buildings for their "green innovation".
I hope to show through this blog and through examples in my work how we can start to design and build in a way that not only protects us, comforts us, serves us but that also starts to protect and repair the damage we as a species have done to the earth while serving humanity in ways undreamt of decades ago.
